The story behind this jyotriling is mentioned in various purans.
Daksh Prajapati made her 27 daughters marry Chandra dev but the affection of Chandra dev was more towards Rohini,which was among 27 daughters of Daksh Prajapati.
This made Daksh Prajapati very furious and he cursed Chandra dev that he will emaciate.
Due to this fear lord Brahma advised Lord Chandrama to worship Mahadev and seek his blessings.
Chandra Dev worshipped Mahadev by all his heart and soul and Mahadev like always got happy and blessed him with a boon that every month he will emaciate and then will turn back to normal.
Mahadev even Don Chandra Dev on his head .
Then on the request of Chandra dev and other Gods, Mahadev blesssed that place and said that he will always reside there as “SOMNATH JYOTRILING”
Devotees from all around the world come here to worship Mahadev.
